Develi Grand Bazaar - Ömür Uzaslan


Develi Grand Bazar Project aims to bring social interaction points and amenities while supporting the local culture with improving the economic benefits of the Develi society with establishment of 3 main buildings, which will be served as Bazaar, Food Court and Culinary Academy together with Tourism information center.

Each of these buildings are designed and planned according to the traditional Develi houses concepts in manner of material and size orientations observed through İzmirli District.

Structural systems fulfill the requirements of such structures with the adequacy of chosen material and system considered. Those were basically space truss system combined with flat slab and ordinary concrete frame systems correspondingly.

Main focuses of the project

Social Aspect;

Creating an opportunity for the residents of Develi to socialize in an environment, where the traditional Develi customs and life style symbolically represented.

Cultural Aspect;

With the Culinary academy and the bazaar the customs and local cuisine will be informed through next generations with professional manner. Typical products of Develi will be served and local practices will be increased accordingly.

Economic Aspect;

Establishing a cluster economy for the local products will support the local trade while culinary academy will educate young generations for employment, whereas the food court will be resting and gathering point for the locals and tourists, who would like to try the local cuisine.

Building information’s;

Functions of the buildings can be listed as;

Bazaar, main market for the locals and tourists that can serve as any kind of fresh and local products can be available for the people

Food Court, Establishment of a gathering point for the different age groups while being able to taste the local cuisine will increase the social interaction between people and will increase the social and economic dynamics of the town

Culinary Academy, practices on the local food cuisine of Develi with improving the local cuisine and allowing next generations to be able to know the practices while serving as a job qualification or opportunity for the local residents.

Structural information

Each of the structures has different structural characteristics due to the functions of the buildings.

Bazaar, with steel trusses to be able to cope with 8,00 m height with wide openings of approximately 8,50 m. Roofing material as sandwich panel to decrease the weight and increase the climate conditions for the structure of a space truss structure.

Food Court, Typical concrete frames will be used when the slab heights and human traffic is considered.

Culinary academy, when the open space is considered, concrete usage with flat slab approach to increase the diversity of used spaces will be ideal form of structure.

Material and Design Information

During the material selection and the design stages most important input were the typical characteristics of Develi, gathered on site. Especially İzmirli District played important role when the sizes, height and material of the projects is considered.

Usage of stone as a cover material or the dimensions of the structures consistent with the local houses ratio of 3,5-5m to 7-8m range are obtained from the site.
